Background This event is more than 90 days older than this page. It is kept here as dated context, not as current news.

Timeline of the highest reported one-time surcharge: $100 in September 2024, $250 in April 2025, $750 in June 2025, $1,000 by mid-2025, $1,500 in parts of Alaska reported by January 2026 and again in July 2026.

What changed

On July 5, 2026, Futurism reported that Starlink “demand surcharges” in high-demand areas ranged from $750 to $1,500, and described the rise over time: $100 in 2024, $1,000 by June 2025, and $1,500 in parts of Alaska “as of last month” (June 2026). It cited PCMag’s reporting, Starlink’s support documentation, customer posts on Reddit, and a post by Techdirt’s Karl Bode.

The headline uses strong language (“bogus fees”). That is the outlet’s framing, not a finding of ours; we report only the amounts and dates it gives.

What it means for you

This report adds a dated press data point for the top of the range. It is not the first: SatelliteInternet.com reported “up to $1,500” in Alaska on January 27, 2026 (our item). So “as of last month” in this report should not be read as the first time the $1,500 figure appeared.

For anyone in Alaska or another high-demand area, the practical points are:

  • The amount is set for your service address and plan when you order or change service. Check checkout before you commit.
  • The surcharge is refundable if you return the hardware within Starlink’s 30-day window, according to its help article.

Who was affected

  • New buyers and some existing owners making changes in areas Starlink treats as high-demand, especially parts of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest.
  • The report names regions, not counties.

What you can check now

What stays the same

Starlink’s help article does not publish amounts, and the surcharge is still one-time and address-based.

How this fits the record

Futurism’s account of the rise matches the dated reports we already hold: $100 in September 2024 (item), $250 in April 2025, $750 in June 2025 (item), and “up to $1,500” in Alaska by January 2026. Its $1,000 figure for June 2025 matches a July 2, 2025 GSMGoTech report of $1,000 in parts of Washington, Oregon and Idaho.

What we don’t know yet

  • Which Alaska communities see $1,500, and whether any see less.
  • Whether the $1,000 June 2025 figure applied in the same areas as earlier $750 reports.
  • Whether the Alaska amount changed between January and June 2026.

Our data

None for Alaska yet. A county figure needs at least 5 reader reports in 6 months.
