What changed
On July 16, 2026, CNET reported that Starlink customers were describing demand surcharges as high as $1,500. The article said the fee, introduced in 2024, applies to new customers in high-demand areas, and that amounts in places such as the Pacific Northwest had stepped up from $100 to $750 to $1,000 over time. It also reported that some customers said they were not notified about the charge, and repeated the account of a customer charged $1,500 after an address verification (our item).
What it means for you
This is a mainstream consumer-tech outlet confirming what trade and enthusiast outlets had reported through the first half of 2026. It does not add a new official figure: Starlink’s help article still publishes no amounts.
The “not notified” point is worth reading carefully. For new orders, Starlink shows the surcharge at checkout before payment. The complaints that stand out in 2026 coverage are from existing customers who were billed after a change, such as resuming from Standby or an address update. Those cases follow the trigger list Starlink added to its help text in April 2026 (our item).
Who is affected
- New buyers in high-demand areas, who see the fee at checkout.
- Existing customers who resume from Standby, change address or switch plans in a high-demand area.
What you can check now
- Before resuming or moving, check what the app shows for the new plan or address. Our page on reactivation and moves covers each case.
- What triggers it lays out Starlink’s current trigger list.
- If you see a charge, telling us the amount, county and event type on the report form helps build a dated public record (no address or account details are collected).
What stays the same
The surcharge is one-time, based on service address and plan, and refundable within the 30-day return window according to Starlink.
How this fits the record
CNET’s report came eleven days after Futurism’s account of $1,500 charges in Alaska (our item) and two weeks after the address-verification case. Taken together, the July 2026 coverage describes the same range that runs through our press layer: $100 at the bottom, $1,500 at the top, with the top amounts in Alaska and the Northwest.
What we don’t know yet
- How many customers have paid a surcharge, and where. Starlink does not publish this.
- Whether any amounts have fallen since July 2026.
- How common unannounced charges on existing accounts are, compared with checkout charges on new orders.
Our data
Not enough reports yet. Our county cells need at least 5 reports in 6 months, and the form opened on October 5, 2026.
