What changed
The FCC’s 2026 Section 706 report on broadband deployment (FCC 26-55), released on Friday, August 14, 2026, included this sentence about satellite broadband, as quoted by PCMag:
“Starlink alone has launched over 2,300 satellites between mid-2024 and mid-2025 and has now deployed more than 7,800 satellites—a worldwide network already with over 7 million American subscribers.”
PCMag, summarized by the Benton Institute and Blandin on Broadband, pointed out that SpaceX told the FCC in September 2025 that Starlink was serving “more than 2 million subscribers in the United States alone,” and that the figure had been over 1.4 million in August 2024.
What it means for you
Nothing changes at your checkout. The report is the FCC’s annual assessment of broadband deployment, not a rule.
It matters for this site’s readers in one way: US subscriber counts are the closest public proxy for how crowded the network is, and the two figures in circulation now differ by a factor of more than three. Treat any “Starlink has X US customers” claim with care until the gap is explained. For scale, SpaceX’s own count for all countries was 12.0 million service lines at June 30, 2026 (our item).
Who this covers
- No customers directly. It describes the US market as the FCC sees it.
What you can check now
- Nothing to check at checkout because of this report. Sold-out and surcharge status at your address still show only there.
- Dated capacity and surcharge changes are on the sold-out log and the surcharge timeline.
What stays the same
Starlink’s surcharge rules, sold-out status and plan speed ranges. The report doesn’t address any of them.
What we don’t know yet
- What the FCC counted. The report sentence doesn’t define “subscribers.” PCMag suggested it may count something other than paying service lines; that is the outlet’s suggestion, not an FCC statement.
- The primary text. We could not open the FCC document itself with our tools, so the quote above is as reported by PCMag via Benton and Blandin. Press layer: we will replace it with the FCC’s own text when we can read it.
- SpaceX’s current US subscriber count. Its filings give worldwide totals only.
